Something a little different for you today. When Matt Merritt was offered the chance to interview Disturbia founder Frank Major, he couldn’t quite understand why they’d be interested in a music site. Then he realised that Disturbia make shirts for the Prodigy and their tees are often found adorning walking rock god Slash. Suddenly, this interview seemed like a very good idea indeed! So, we sent Frank some questions, and here’s what he had to say!
For those who aren’t familiar with your label, what should we expect from Disturbia clothes?
For the uninitiated, Disturbia produces a mouth-watering, brain-melting array of the most beautifully twisted illustrated clothing and accessories known to man ever.
There seems to be a lot of humour in your designs, I’m guessing you try not to take life too seriously?
Life’s too short. There definitely is a tongue-in-cheek element to our designs, and lots of poking fun at pop culture. There are also some serious message in there, but I like to sugar coat them a bit.
What made you start designing shirts? Was it something you planned or something that happened to come up?
Just a love of the medium really. I’ve always been fascinated with the t-shirt, and its kind of blank canvas nature, providing the opportunity to make wearable art.
I founded Disturbia after I graduated in 2003, as it was a dream goal I had had for many years. I basically wanted to make myself self-sufficient by thinking up and creating strangely lovely t-shirts.
Your shirts have been worn by the likes of the Prodigy and Slash. How does it feel to see such high profile names in your designs?
It’s very flattering. But I get just as much of a kick when I see everyday people wearing them on the street. It was mind-blowing however, to see Slash, a childhood hero of mine wearing something I created.
If you could design a shirt for anyone, who would it be?
Probably Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam fame. Or maybe Hunter Thompson. Bless his soul.
The Disturbia brand seems to keep going from strength to strength, what can we expect next?
Total Global Domination. ! We’re moving into and developing more cut and sew garments, so basically slowly expanding the line. New garments, and new accessories.
Thanks for answering our questions, is there anything else you’d like to say to our readers?
