Jose James’s new album, which was recently released on the 22nd of February brings something new to the jazz generation. This album has a more edgier and sensual sound that really come to show their true colours in tracks such as ‘Promise in love’ and ‘touch ‘.
Since his last album he has performed in up to 30 countries, showcasing his cemented jazz talent with the world. Working with Chico Hamilton and Junior Mance, he built a fan-base all over the world. Jose is first to stress that the global community has shaped his new album and the album certainly shows an array of different sounds.
I personally wasn’t to keen on the first track of the album called ‘code’, but as the CD continues the tracks get more integrated and the different sounds are vast. I find the track ‘lay you down’ to have a modern feel, it almost reminds me of Justin Timberlake’s more relaxed tunes like ‘Senorita’. However this track can get a bit repetitive.
I sometimes find that the artists vocal has to much of a soft voice to keep up with the rhythms of the music, like in the beginning ‘Blackmagic’ for example, but it warms up further on in the track.
Overall, coming from a girl who doesn’t generally listen to jazz music, I think that this CD is easy to listen to and could maybe convert a girl to the jazz scene.
