A charming four track EP that doesn’t travel anywhere adventurous but neither does it creep towards the disastrous. This release is planted firmly in the middle, flourishing on the safe ground.
While Alessi’s voice has a certain charming quality about it, there is something to it that might irritate people. However putting that aside The Soul Proprietor is a good collection of songs. The Robot is a cheery opening track that, while it plays host to some questionable lyrics, is a promising opening. It’s fast paced and light enough to brighten anyone’s mood, but it doesn’t overdo it to the point where someone might switch it off out of sheer annoyance.
Dancing Feet is full of haunting, quivering vocals and lovely lyrics, a mixture that is delectable to the ears. Although it’s not overtly happy it is one of those songs where you can’t but help reach for the repeat button. A beautiful song, with a beautiful melody, definitely worth a listen even if it’s not your usual music taste.
However the remaining two tracks, Shovelling and The Bird Song, provide a contrast with the other half. Neither are overly remarkable, and they remain that way after a few listens, which is a shame. Her downfall with Shovelling was the lack of imagination musically; it didn’t stand out and despite lasting just over a minute and a half it dragged. With The Bird Song everything clashed, in this case it was an overload of ideas, which again was a shame because it had potential to give Dancing Feet a run for its money.
Alessi is a very promising singer, which is only further proved by the fact that she is supporting Laura Marling on her UK tour. Keep an eye out for her, even if she won’t be appearing on the front cover of magazines any time soon she’s still a relaxing and worthwhile listen.
