FROM THE VAULTS: GRAND THEFT BUS –

April 28th, 2009  |  Published in Reviews

Made Upwards is the third album from Canadian four piece Grand Theft Bus and, I have to admit, the moment I realised their nationality I had high hopes. Canada is responsible for some of my favourite music, from The Tragically Hip through Wintersleep to The Barenaked Ladies. Great bands and all ones who share a passion for well crafted lyrics coupled to music that tells a story, no pressure then guys! These guys encapsulate all that makes them so special in a neat little package with opener

‘Do I Have To Dance’. Starting off with a poppy rhythm and gentle strumming guitars, it builds to a crescendo-ing chorus and then gallops off on a tangent before finally finding itself again – magic! As the album proceeds we see even more facets of the band from leaping math-rock time changes to acoustic meandering. From time to time the band get lost and come up a little short, but it’s a fair price to pay for such eclecticism!
