Call Upon The Author

Awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome! Oh, sorry, you want a proper review. Well, ok then, but just so you know those first five words are pretty accurate.
Little Fish are a breath of fresh air in a genre that has grown stagnant in its own repetitive creations. They’ve harnessed that spectacular raw quality that can often be so difficult to find and fused it with the experience gained from the relentless touring and as a result wield a power that should be at the top of any musician’s wish list.
When they take to the stage Juju, guitars and vocals, and Nez, drums, storm through their songs taking the expectant audience on an extraordinary journey. Although the crowd were sluggish in their appreciation Little Fish were sharp and precise in their delivery, producing seamless beats that pulsed throughout the O2 Academy.
Darling Dear was a definite crowd pleaser. The gentleness of the guitar and the soft vocals at the start, the gradual build up and quickening pace, the potential, the promise of a memorable song and the inevitable explosive conclusion…one of the best support bands ever.
With Am I Crazy those who remained unconvinced were finally beaten into submission as their reservations were annihilated with its inexplicably catchy chorus and unpretentious lyrics. They performed their single with the same formidable ferocity that was present throughout the entirety of their set.
They worked well together; Nez provided a steady and impressive backbone on the drums while Juju expanded on that with everything she had. As they played it was clear that she didn’t just perform the songs, she was immersed in the lyrics, almost living them as she sang. And it was just as obvious that Nez revelled in the music that was created.
It’s easy to say they performed well, but to make that statement would be to truly underestimate just how much passion and enthusiasm they have for what they do, not to mention how much fun they are to watch. No, they didn’t play well, they played fantastically, and now that they’ve made their way onto the radar it’s hard to imagine that they’ll ever find their way off of it.
They are confident about their upcoming debut album, Baffled And Beat, and in all honesty they have no reason not to be. With everything that Little Fish displayed tonight their future looks secure. Little Fish are a true testament to what Blondie pioneered all those years ago and it’s refreshing to know that it won’t be dying out any time soon.
