AQUALUNG – Magnetic North

Aqualung‘s Matt Hales, almost gave it up. But even when he moved from England to LA, the singer/songwriter continued to write, even writing 3 songs with Leona Lewis. Soon, he was back with Aqualung in the recording studio.

Thank. God.

The album starts off with New Friend and with a cheeky piano tune, cheerful lyrics and with a bridge to get everyone clapping, dancing and singing along, this track was definitely the right track to start off the sixth studio album. And the bounciness continues with the second track, Reel Me In, which presents an almost Muse-like feel to the song, because the vocals sound similar.
Sundowing presents us the first softer track, and with Kelly Sweet’s backing vocals, mixed with Hale’s voice, and lyrics, this song is rather… well, sweet. And this track isn’t the first, slow meaningful song on the album.
Where Lost shows a heartbroken man, still clinging on to his lost relationship, and Remember Us giving more emotion, with the fragile voice and peaceful melodies, which is beautifully composed, in my opinion, Thin Air is the best song on the album. A fairytale romance, that a teenager can only dream of, Hale’s voice is quietly beautiful, matched perfectly with the woman’s vocals, calm melodies, and a quiet guitar playing in the background, and with lyrics such as “Tell me that you’ll love me forever, we’ll go without another word”, this is a perfect track to get lost into.
Fingertip, the first single off of the album, has great lyrics, such as “I wanna knock knock knock down you down, wanna steal your bicycle, wanna rock your rocking horse”, and a beat that’s impossible not to dance to, this song is guaranteed to put a cheeky grin on your face.
An album with 12 songs, each with meaningful/cheeky lyrics, bouncy beats, calm melodies and all of them excellently composed, this album has become one of my own personal favourites, and with good reason. It has everything that you need or want in an album.
Except the kitchen sink…
