To read the accompanying press release it would seem The Hundred In The Hands pretty much cover everything from punk to hip-hop with a little French Disco for good measure… oh good.
Hailing from Brooklyn I have to say my first impressions of the album are of Blondie playing Studio 54, this is a good thing, all sultry vocals and pounding disco beats. Whilst I am sure if you analyse each track and strip it down there are a myriad of influences, the important thing is that each track as a whole is a glorious pop song.
From the Siouxsie Sioux wails on Gold Blood or the Ladyhawke style of the fantastic Last City, Eleanore Everdell’s vocals strike the right balance between aloof and vulnerable, effortlessly floating across the melodies.
The rather grandiose claims that they are genre splicing are actually not as outlandish as they first seem, Lovesick (Once Again) ebbs like The Strokes to a disco beat, Pigeons throbs with an 80’s electro rhythm and first single Dressed In Dresden rumbles with a squelchy bass line and the urgency of punk.
This is a great album, filled with frantic energy and an effortless air of cool, New York City has long been the birth place of musical wonders so give this one a slap and welcome another addition to the NYC family.
