BROOKE SHARKEY – A Taste Of Truth

Sometimes, it seems, life likes to imitate the movies. The fact that Mike Connaris, a recording studio producer, first heard Brooke Sharkey’s voice floating through an open window and subsequently offered her free use of his studio, appears to be one of these times.
Listening to Brooke’s calm and relaxed vocals it’s hard not to be enthralled in the same spell that captured Connaris. Every now and then, there are bursts of song in which her voice is reminiscent of Liv Kristine’s, of the Leaves’ Eyes persuasion, and the guitar remains a gentle but prominent companion throughout the five-track EP, A Taste Of Truth.
On the opening track If We Were Water the mixture of English and French contributes to the enchanting nature of the song, as does the soft sound of trickling water in the background towards the end, and the masterful control she has over both guitar and voice also hold a certain charm.
Home is a haunting track that displays the beauty of Brooke’s voice, more so than the other four songs featured on the EP. It’s gentle and soft, in spite of its lack of even the mildest of harsh edges to give it some texture, it’s still a captivating track and probably the best one on the EP.
The next track starts off a bit livelier than the first two. While Our Ways is fast paced and makes a change from the slowness of the previous two there isn’t much to keep a hold of your interest, and the same can be said for second to last song Music In The Park, although reverting back to the gentleness that appears to be her trademark it’s hardly different from the opener.
Les Amoureux is another beautiful yet haunting song and firmly cements A Taste Of Truth as something to listen to when you want to sit back and relax. This is a very promising EP from someone who clearly wants to get into and belongs in the music industry, perhaps all the hard-work and dedication Brooke has put into her music since she was 11 will pay off.
