IN DARKLIGHT – Dying To Confess

Dying To Confess, debut album from In Darklight, passes by in a blur of whiney inconvenience. Whilst listening to the opening track, ‘What’s Happening?’, the vocals seem quirky and give the impression that they could be the selling point of an otherwise average band. Yet as the album drags on, Ben Sellers’ whiney vocals begin to grate upon the ear. This offering fails to include even the slightest bit of potential.
While the afore mentioned ‘What’s Happening?’ is a catchy tune it fails to provide anything spectacular and is, rather unfortunately, the band at the top of their game. In a way it is quite lucky that this track is at the very start since it is the only thing that would make a listener want to continue in their venture of this album, and for all the dissatisfaction that is to come, this song is still worth a listen.
Granted, on first listen the initial novelty lasts for a few songs until they gradually worsen in quality so much so that the traffic outside is of far more interest. Every now and then there are flashes of Alkaline Trio style vocals, except not as good, and a lot more pitiful.
‘Consequences’ and ‘Turn Into Somebody’ merge together in a meaningless mass of lyrics and a disappointing mash of instruments. Both tracks leave a growing sense of boredom and the stop button becomes all the more attractive. After that the songs just sort of fade into the background with nothing left to draw the attention back onto themselves.
