MY FIRST TOOTH – My First Tooth

My First Tooth are singer/guitarist (and songwriter) Ross Witt and violin player Sophie Galpin and on this, their debut EP they have created a truly lovely little album! With the help of their faithful sidekicks The Rubies providing subtle percussion, harmonica and even the odd trumpet they’ve crafted the sort of tunes that, sadly, you just don’t hear much of anymore. Unlike so many of their contemporaries they’ve avoided being relentlessly depressing, though that’s not to say they can’t be a little gloomy when the song dictates. Rather, as on opener ‘Sleet And Snow’ they live (musically speaking) in a realm that is extremely relaxed and ambles along at a calm pace. On the beautiful ‘Honesty Honesty’ Witt plucks at the heartstrings in a way Damien Rice would kill to achieve, as he sings “If I could be more like him, would it change a thing” you can’t help but feel the lump in your throat… this is a truly heart wrenching song, stunning! So good is that song, in fact, that it would justify buying the EP on it’s own. Thankfully though, with the possible exception of the slightly lacklustre ‘Typewriter’, the rest of the tracks stand up on their own. If this and the goFASTER>> release we reviewed a few days back are anything to go by, then we should all be keeping an eye on Alcopop Records… they’re on to a few winners!
