THE CHAKRAS – Build Me A Swan

To put it simply, this album is phenomenal. The entire album produces such epic swells in effortless abundance and it will leave you absolutely drained. Each track soars with its own unique, beautiful core seemingly produced with the sole intention to fill the listener with an uplifting sense of confidence and passion. It’s not that their structure is built in the same way as Coldplay, these are less universal and more personal and story based. This isn’t sing-along music, this is something that moves your soul, not your vocal chords. But it is also here where you feel that that extra punch would lift everything into the realms of Snow Patrol/U2/Coldplay at their peak.
Rocky Whittakers voice is very reminiscent of fellow Dubliner, Mark Greaney from JJ72. A passion for an epic is something else they both share ‘Formula’ and ‘Oxygen’, wouldn’t be out of place is secretly slipped in there. The Verve and Doves have been thrown in as comparisons, but this is much more of a 90’s band break out album, throwing around a touch psychedia and post-rock to bring a fresh touch to guitar bands.
There is no dip in form throughout the album, even though it does tend to stick to one straight formula. ‘Slowdrive’ (the albums Interpol – NYC) and ‘Blinded’ take care of the subtler moments, but it will be remembered for the like of ‘Beautiful Sorrow’ and the finale ‘End:Beginnings’, which are devastating big examples of musicianship and bold ideas.
Having spent a good chunk of last year hitting most of the venues in London, catch them at the Borderline later this month before the inevitable blow-up.
