PHANTOM LIMB – The Pines

April 2nd, 2012  |  Published in Reviews

Phantom Limb are a bit of a surprise package for a couple of reasons. Firstly, they’re a country band from Bristol. Yep, that’s right, Bristol, England. Secondly, it’s country music that isn’t too preachy or annoying, but manages to find that nice blend of the quietly dramatic with the gently whimsical – a very nice mix that makes this record a bit of an unassuming gem.
This is one of those CDs that it wasn’t a chore to listen to for review: the songs are nicely pitched and well played, evocative of hazy spring days and lost loves. You feel that quintessential country sadness, but it’s all done with that bittersweet feel and ironic smile that makes it a real pleasure, rather than a trawl through heartbreak. Singer Yolanda has a really soulful voice, and a seemingly effortless range which she employs almost as an afterthought. The harmonies provided by the guys in the band are what makes this feel really layered and lovely, and the vocals hang together just as pretty as a picture.
The music is classic alt-country, with just that little bit of modern knowledge thrown in to stop it sounding twee or dated.
The funny thing is, this isn’t massively my sort of music at all – but I think this is a really well played, understated offering from Phantom Limb. I prefer my guitars a lot heavier, but this just feels like summer is on it’s way, and brings a dreamy smile to your face. Give this one a go, and you’ll find that the songs will get under your skin – but painlessly, as if they’ve always been there, just waiting for you to remember them. Very nice indeed.
