Call Upon The Author

Your New Antique are a Huddersfield based four-piece. I was instantly impressed by them and my admiration for them continues to grow the more I hear. They recently signed to The Animal Farm label who have a similar philosophy to Factory Records. Their first release on the label will be the single Sirens which is part of the “5 Songs, 5 Bands, 5 Cities” E.P. on the 31st of May.
A second single is to follow in June along with a UK tour. I strongly advise anyone to catch one of their gigs as I recently had the pleasure of seeing them live and was blown away.
The band classifies themselves as purveyors of dark pop. I feel that their tracks have more oomph than any pop song, dark or not. As individuals each member of the band provides unique qualities which gel strongly to make something beyond comparison to any other band that I’m aware of. Their uniqueness comes from a mix of many different styles and influences.
The only comparison I could make would be that the lead singer’s baritone style is vaguely reminiscent of Ian Curtis. His vocals have the capability to effortlessly range from forceful and punchy to melodic and moving. These skills are displayed in Sirens in which the vocals feel almost like an extra instrument rather than a separate entity, rising and falling perfectly with the music. The vocal harmonies with other band members also work really well.
Both the bass player and lead guitarist have their own style and clearly each add something different to the overall sound. The lead guitar parts are fast paced and metal influenced whereas the bass lines are moody and wandering.
A lot of the time I find drummers can go unnoticed in bands but this one’s talent is too clearly visible for that. The drums in each track are frantic but in a clever way. It isn’t just noise it’s a fast and complex rhythm, watching him live the sticks were just a blur.
Your New Antique are talented writers as well as musicians. Their sets demonstrate the full range of the talents they posses. Tracks like Sirens, Black Sea and Open Your Eyes are powerful energetic anthems. Whilst No One’s There and Break-dance have their moments of power they are also moving and beautiful in places. This beauty comes from the meaningful lyrics and the vocal harmonies combined with almost ethereal guitar parts.
Your New Antique have a very bright future, especially with the backing of The Animal Farm. Imagine Ian Curtis formed a band with Keith Moon, Mike Dirnt from Green Day, Stephen Carpenter from the Deftones and Carl Barat and you still haven’t imagined Your New Antique, but you’re getting somewhere near.
