FROM THE VAULTS: MAWKIN:CAUSLEY – The Awkward Recruit

Jim Causley is a strange creature, his boy band looks and natural charisma not really fitting his status as one of the most exciting young folk talents around. So when he decided to team up with equally fresh faced young instrumentalists Mawkin there was a frenzy of excitement amongst the folk community as to how the results would sound. With their handful of old folk songs, both standards and lesser known tracks fused to their own arrangements, with a focus on themes of rebellion and the futility of war, these youngsters have set out their stall as a band to both keep to tradition and subtly shape and mould it for the future. From the opening
‘Jolly Broom Man’ there’s a sense that these guys have the potential to bring traditional folk to a wider audience in the same way Seth Lakeman has, and perhaps go even further. This is an impressive album indeed!
