FROM THE VAULTS: EG – Adventure Man

He may have started out, many years ago, as a member of Brother Beyond, but Eg White is more than just a cheesy pop singer. In fact, over the last few years you’ve heard a number of his songs. You’ve hummed the tunes and, even when you’ve not been a fan of the singer, you’ve begrudgingly thought to yourselves “this really is quite a good song“. You see Eg has been the go-to guy for the likes of Will Young (Leave Right Now), Adele (Chasing Pavements), Duffy (Warwick Avenue), James Morrison (You Give Me Something) and Joss Stone (You Had Me). He’s worked with the likes of Pink, Kylie and James Blunt too… Now though, he says he’s using his own album as a chance to explore something “less commercial“. He’s certainly right about that. This is a collection that certainly isn’t listener friendly. In fact, on first listen you’ll struggle to believe he could be behind such solid gold hits, but on subsequent runs through the album subtle melodies, deft touches and some lovely lyrics begin to show through. The likes of ‘Time To Fall’ and ‘Pull Me Trough’ prove that perseverance here really is rewarded. This isn’t by any stretch a bad album then, but on his next release EG might benefit from keeping a touch closer to the day job!
