Kodaline. Great name isn’t it? One you can imagine being shouted from a stadium tannoy to thousands of screaming fans.
The four lads from Dublin who make up the band understand that they’re not quite there yet, however their soon to be released debut EP (It’s out on September 9th, but we’ve had a sneaky listen!) shows signs that they may not be too far off either!
With three of the band having known each other since they were just eight years old there’s a natual kinship among band members. They all seem to be equal in the partnership too, with different members writing the tracks on this album. However with a common theme running throughout (break ups of course… is there a more common song subject?),the tracks here seem to be matching and, at the same time, clashing due to their differing views and approaches to a common theme. It doesn’t sound too great on paper, but when you hear these tracks you’ll understand!
The production on these songs only lends cerdence to the idea that big crowds are in Kodaline’s future, epic is aword bandied about a lot but here it’s definitely valid. Steve Harris has done a great job (and he has some experience with hugely popular Irish rockers having mixed for U2 in the past).
If this set feels a little disjointed then, that can be accepted, after all this is a young band. But when they find that cohesive writing style they’ll be destined for success. We’ll be keeping an eye on Kodaline and we think you should too!
