A debut album, presented in a fifty page hardback book, if you’re thinking that’s a bit arrogant you’d be forgiven for your opinion. It’s a bold move certainly, but one that, once you’ve listened to Tallulah Rendall’s debut, begins to make sense. Production duties are handled by Marius De Vries, so expansive sound and wafting orchestration are to be expected, it’s a good match to Rendall’s other worldly music though. This isn’t an album to listen to on the move though, rather it’s a collection of songs that you need to sink into to fully absorb, best to settle down put this on the stereo of an evening and let the beauty of these tunes wash over you like lapping waves. Her best known track, previous single ‘Lay Me Down’ reveals a jazzy, sultry, but subtle vocal that brings to mind a much more adventurous Polly Scattergood and, like Polly, it’s hard to escape Kate Bush references. With so many female singer/songwriters appearing at the moment Tallulah has her work cut out to carve out a niche for herself, but if she carries on following her natural tendencies and ends up in the same markets as Joanna Newsom or even Regina Spektor she may well have a glittering career ahead of her.
