Female-fronted Pop/Punk. Don’t give me that face, I know you’ve dabbled in a bit of We Are The In Crowd, or Paramore at the least. Well here’s a female-fronted Pop/Punk band with something a little different to offer, and you’re assured to find something to love in this debut. Obvious vocal influences aside, Jenna McDougall has an extra layer to her voice that sets her apart from the, albeit small, pack, I’d go as far as to say she sounds more like the love child of Tay Jardine and Ian Watkins.
Musically this advances on the generic Pop/Punk formula by adding little snippets of other genres, such as Post-Hardcore, and some P!nk style pop, and this works great with the edgy, attitude-fuelled vocals from McDougall.
For me though, what really got me into this album so quickly was the bands ability to actually write songs with depth and layers, don’t get me wrong, We Are The In Crowd are one of my favourite bands but in terms of actual song-writing, Tonight Alive are ahead by such a way that I doubt any female-fronted Pop/Punk band will be able to keep up on their next release(s).
