CRIMEA X – Phoros

July 11th, 2009  |  Published in Reviews

Crimea X marks the coming together of one DJ Rocca and a certain Jukka Reverberi, the former a well known name on the Mediterranean dance scene and the latter a former member of nineties Italian glam rockersGiardini di Mirò, an outfit whose cult following have compared them to the likes of Arab Strap and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Together they put together the sort of cosmic electro that seems custom built for a neon lit bar in Ayia Napa. Opening track ‘10pm’ (which is also remixed here twice) has a real euro dance feel to it, while ‘December’ opens in a rather more epic manner, like a missing soundtrack piece from a neo-noir sci-fi adventure. This track is far more exciting than the first, hinting at a more interesting direction for the duo than summer holiday nightclub standards. Sadly ‘October’ descends rapidly into cliché-ville, lacking only some inane singing by a latino girl who can’t actually speak English to separate it from so much of the pop market dance that appears on daytime music TV. All in all, these guys have some solid ideas, but they really need to find the right direction and launch themselves at it post haste!
