As promised, it’s a bumper batch of goodies this week, so here is part two of our roundup.
Â
THE CHEMISTS – A Love Like No-One Else
Distiller Records
The Chemists may have a fair few years on most of their peers, but age also brings experience and these guys have developed a knack for crafting the sort of easygoing pop-roc that fits perfectly onto FM radio. This is a classic example, occupying a spot between Feeder and Orson, it’s not going to touch boundaries, let alone break them, but it’s good fun in it’s own way.
DAVID SAW – Buy My Record
Iris Records
Produced by Benjamin Taylor, this is an inoffensive slice of acoustic music. Sadly it’s also completely unmemorable, the kind of bland song that fits just fine at the midpoint of an album, but just doesn’t cut the mustard as a single release.
PAUL STEEL – In A Coma
Ray Gun
Ooh, handclaps, always an adventurous way to start a song, but this track wouldn’t be the same without them. Steel has a great voice and this track, an early sixties throwback with a touch of a Polyphonic Spree feel to it is a real feel good number, even despite that title. Give it a whirl, you’ll be impressed!
CHRISTINA COURTIN – Foreign Country
Nonesuch
This rootsy little number has a bluegrass-lite vibe, but a summery feel too, pitching her tent midway between Norah Jones and Joni Mitchell she’s carving out a niche for herself with the old fashioned tools of solid song writing and memorable melody… shocking!
MODERNAIRE – Faites Vos Jeux
myspace.com/modernairetheband
Four hugely talented young men have combined to form Modernaire and in little under a year they’ve been invited to tour with the Ting Tings and remixed Empire Of The Sun. Stark and fascinating electronica, this is clearly impressive stuff, but it lacks soul for this listener, hopefully future tracks will match the skill with some heart.
