BROADWAY CALLS – Good Views, Bad News
September 4th, 2009 | Published in Reviews
Poor Broadway Calls, almost everything you review about them includes a comparison with Green Day. It can’t be helped I suppose, Billie Joe did sign them to his own label at one point, but these punk rockers are determined to plow their own furrow. I’ll be honest, you can’t help but wonder if they got together over a shared love of albums like Dookie, but there are other influences at play here too, they may not be as furious, but I’ll bet they’ve listened to their fair share of Rancid. They’ve got an air of authenticity from their producer, Black Flag drummer Bill Stevenson, too. Most of all, there’s a sense of fun with this album that reminds me of my favourite ‘traditional punk acts’, The Ramones and The Buzzcocks. Lead single ‘Be All That You Can’t Be’ sets out their stall, but the rest of the album backs up their pop-punk standing. They even get all melodic on ‘The Sundowners’, and they make it work! The band say it’s important to them to not be stuck in one place musically, and although they might be tied to one post, they’re stretching the rope as far as it will go and it’s working in their favour on this album!
