ENOCHIAN THEORY – Evolution: Creatio Ex Nihilio

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t really entirely sure what to expect the first time I popped this album into the CD player. For some reason I had it in my head that it would be something akin to the sound of Muse being raped by Mastodon while Porcupine Tree look on appreciatively. Thankfully though, my fears were unfounded, the prog and metal elements are both most certainly there, but they all fit together rather nicely and, as a bonus, front man Ben Harris-Hayes actually spends most of the album singing, rather than screaming into the microphone. This is normally the point where I’d pick out individual tracks, but I’m not sure that would work here as really this record is built as a whole rather than assembled from parts, but if you want to ease yourselves into ET’s world, you could do worse than start with ‘Tedium’, it’s a gentle introduction to the bands sound, that gears you up for the rest of the album. So, the ultimate question, did I like it? Well, I have to be honest, I wasn’t really sure where the band were going at first, but after a few runs through the album it began to flow better, especially when I put it on the stereo one evening, sat back on the sofa with the lights dimmed and just let it wash over me… I’d heartily recommend getting it on vinyl, but for the fact the band haven’t pressed any. Nonetheless, if you like to challenge yourself and listen to something outside your comfort zone, this is a superb starting point, and being as it’s entirely self-funded and produced, get a copy direct from the band, they’ll appreciate the support.
