SOUND OF GUNS – Elementary Of Youth

November 1st, 2009  |  Published in Reviews  |  3 Comments

“Liverpool’s Sound Of Guns…”, that first word alone can send shivers down a mans spine as he hears the jangly guitars, the Scouse ‘charm’, the innumerable nods to the Beatles. Thankfully, Sound Of Guns didn’t get the memo, instead crafting a sound that brings to mind the unabashed rock of the seventies, not least with the EP’s liberal splashes of prime Zeppelin swagger. The title track is a potential chart behemoth, while second track ‘Dead Sea Scrolls’ has a touch of the Arctic Monkeys at their rockiest, showing that this isn’t a purely retro act. With the likes of Foo Fighters ever popular and Biffy Clyro entering the mainstream consciousness it seems the time is right for these lads to make their mark, and if that means another nail in the coffin of female fronted electro-pop, then so much the better! Now, where did I put those flares…

Sound of Guns are (in my opinion) are a fairly decent rock band that have a little of the stadium bluster of bands such as mid 80′s U2, The Alarm etc to them (right down to the artillery drum repeat halfway through the lead track). But I have to take issue with your comment about “female fronted electro pop.” OK, fair enough if you don’t like electronic music – even although I would argue strongly that much of the most exciting and innovative music this year has had large elements of electronica in it (from The XX, Fuck Buttons and La Roux to name three that come to mind) but your comment about “a nail in female fronted electro-pop” implies that you only want rid of female fronted electro pop, which sounds rather uncomfortably sexist ???

    Hey Robin,

thanks for your comments. You’re absolutely right in that I’m not really a fan of a lot of the electro-pop (regardless of frontperson gender) that’s passed through my letter box, but I’m sorry if you take what was supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek comment seriously. It was intended as jokey hyperbole, mocking myself for my classic rock leanings, hence the last sentence, so if I’ve offended you or anyone, I can but apologise.

On the record though, I like Fuck Buttons, but I though La Roux’s album was dire!

  3. Cool. Thanks for the response. It was actually my girlfriend who read the review and was offended and said that she thought it was sexist, so I agreed to raise it. Even tongue in cheek comments can be interpreted as discriminatory. For example if you had written “Another nail in asian / black pop music, then so much the better,” then you may have had all sorts of complaints!

As for not liking electro pop, well it would be boring if we all just agreed with each other all the time, and I guess as a child of the 80′s my mind is always going to be open for a bit of synthtopia. Glad you like Fuck Buttons though….. talking of which I need to go and start compiling my albums of the year list for my blog ! Tally – ho !
