So, the year draws to a close and the shelves are stacked with Christmas knick-knacks. Thankfully though, in singles corner business carries on as usual. Admittedly these tracks are unlikely to be Christmas number one, but they’ll be far more entertaining than whatever rubbish is thrown at us by the X-Factor camp.
THE LITTLE PHILISTINES – Bus Pass
www.myspace.com/thelittlephilistines
Jerky but melodic tunes are the order of the day here, a little quirky but still accessible to the masses. The lead vocal has a touch of the Johnny Borrell about it, but this is no Razorlight style identikit indie. Previous comparisons to early Futureheads are very apt… go have a listen!
THE CB’S – Misdemeanour
Jam City Records
Built around the hugely infectious vocals of Yolanda this tune, a superb mix of seventies funk beats, girl band vocals and a vibe taken straight out of New York’s 70’s club scene, if there was any justice in the world everybody would know this, and now I have it on CD everybody I know will very soon!
BUSH DOCTORS – Rockin’ On A Speaker
Bush Doctors Music
Bush Doctors is the pseudonym for a pair of the most hugely influential producers of the last decade, hidden behind this moniker they’re dealing out a prescription of heavy hitting beats and cut up vocal samples. You can’t help but feel this is more of a taster than a proper track but nonetheless it sounds good and we’ll be keeping an ear cocked for the jungle drums.
LOSERS – No Man Is An Island
Distiller Records
Heavily distorted electro with a weirdly monotone and slightly mechanised voice reciting random names, genres and bands, it all sounds like an old Mylo track. This isn’t nearly so sanitised though, but rather a downright dirty tune that could be custom built to blare out of an underground nightclub in a brit-flick.
STANLEY BRINKS – End Of The World
Ciao Ketchup
And so, for the last of this weeks tracks we head away from electro in favour of mellow and slightly folkie indie music. This is a charming little tune, and bodes well for the forthcoming album from this former member of Herman Dune. Sitting just the right side of twee, this is the sort of tune best enjoyed when curled up on the sofa!
