Paddy Steer is a man in his own world, writing music that veers from laptop-folk to pure crazed instrumentals by way of mini tunes a few seconds in length but packing the punch of concertos. A staple of the Manchester underground scene through his work in Toolshed and Homelife, this is Steer’s first solo venture, so it really is a voyage of discovery. When you bounce this many ideas around you’re bound to break new ground, and Steer has done so with a vengeance! From the lilting, acoustic, ‘Spanish Tea’ to the Hawaiian soundtrack of the brilliantly titled ‘A Badger’s North’ (already my pick for song title of the year!), Steer serves up stunning sounds capes littered with electronica and folksy acoustica in equal measure. Sure, there are a few tracks that might benefit from some vocals (which would possibly take them to even more weird and wonderful places), what is here is magical enough in it’s own right. It’s wrapped in some truly gorgeous artwork too!
