SINGLES CORNER! 19/01/2010

January 19th, 2010  |  Published in Reviews

It’s time once again to peruse through the mail and pick out for you, dear reader, the juiciest singles that have wafted to our ears this past week. Or, to put it more bluntly, here’s the soundtrack to our Tuesday! As always, we’d love your thoughts on these tracks and artists.

ERLAND AND THE CARNIVAL – Trouble In Mind
Full Time Hobby

Wrapped in ‘vintage’ production this track is a slab or rock so downbeat it might even make Morrissey look cheerful. For all that though it’s a strangely addictive little number and bodes well for their forthcoming debut album!

THE IRON DOOR CLUB – Amateurs & Cheats
One Above Records

This is the debut release from these Derby natives, but they play with the assured looseness of a band who’ve been around for years. Not bad for a bunch of lads who only really got rolling last year. This chugging rocker is a great intro, remeniscent of the best 90′s brit rockers with a bit of a timeless sheen.

CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG – Heaven Can Wait
Becaue Music

Featuring Beck, this acoustic ditty with a stomping beat is an intriguing affair. Gainsbourg’s vocals are largely masked by Beck’s and I can’t help but wonder if this is planned as her voice, although pleasant enough, is airy and lacks power or punch.

MUSEE MECANIQUE – Like Home
Souterrain Transmissions

Essentially a slightly eerie soundscape that’s softened by the addition of delicate vocals, this is a peculiar beast, very interesting but the least likely single we’ve yet had through the letter box here at CUTA towers… it’s good though!

LET’S GO TO WAR – Life We Live
Last gang Records

You’re a producer who likes a touch of electronica and you’ve had a mate turn up on your doorstep clutching a guitar in one hand, a skateboard in the other and asking to crash on the sofa for a while… the logical next step is surely to craft a tune that blends Daft Punk with Jay-Z? If you agree, this is the track for you and if you don’t, well… you’re wrong!
